Tagged

I was tagged by Paddy. The rules:

I. You have to look up page 123 in the nearest book around you.
II. Look for the fifth sentence.
III. Then post the three sentences that follow that fifth sentence on page 123.
IV. And then tag five people, just like you were tagged.

The book literally right next to me when I saw it was American Fascists by Chris Hedges, which I hope to review this weekend. Ironically, this passage on page 123 is one of the important points in the book, about how the radical right coopts language of science to promote anti-science.

They need in the midst of their flight from reality to be reassured that science--science not contaminated by secular humanists and nonbelievers--is on their side. In this they are a distinctly modern movement. They need the imprint of science and scholarship to legitimize myth.

I tag Westender, Connie Kuusisto, Chris, Laffy, Village Green (who's for Hillary).

Oh, bloody hell.

Okay, here it is. Not very exciting, but the nearest book is vol. 16 of the Encyclopedia Britanica. And here are sentences 4-7 on p. 123:

Never mind, it's too damn long. I'm not typing all that crap. It's like 50 words. But I will say that the entry is titled "Sacred or Holy" and sentences 4-7 discuss philosopher Max Scheler and theologian Rudolf Otto.

Oy. I should make you read the whole thing just for tagging me.

LOL! You're a good sport, Westender.

I can't believe you're making me do this, Dave of OhDave fame.

Geez, okay, but first you have to know. I'm in a room with a floor to ceiling, wall-to-wall set of book shelves, all filled. I'll see which one appeals to me.

The book nearest me is America, the Book, by Jon Stewart. Page 123 is a voter registration form (ironically), Stewart version. After the fifth sentence is this:

"By filling out this form, you attest that you are a United States citizen and that you will be 18 years old on or before Election Day. (If you will not be 18 on or before Election Day, but could pass for 18 and need some quick cash, fill out form V-18, available in basement room B-05 after 7 p.m. Ask for Carlo.)

Ha! Perfect!
Okay, now I have to tag Paddy back, and you back, since you both ganged up and pounced on me. So here we go:
Paddy,
OhDave,CliffDoggy, Kirsten,Blogenfreude

Oh, and Paddy and Davey? You're so going to regret this. ; )

I've just come to realize that Laffers and I know all the same bloggers. Our world is small.
I'm getting every. Single. One. Of. You. Back.
Just you wait, you evil people.

Hi ohdave - it's been a while! I enjoyed visiting you and your tagged friends.

Now if only I had something else to do...

I'm still trying to think of a way to get back at you. So many visuals going through my little pea brain.

Can you imagine what I'm thinking, Davey? Hmmm?

So many books at hand, hmmmm. The answer just posted at my blog.

By the way, it's not that I'm so much "for Hillary" as for more civil discourse and against all the nastiness. I want them both on the same ticket, actually, because I'm greedy -- I want 16 years of Democratic presidential leadership.
